I’m going with THE THING as my remake choice. Not because it’s a fabulous movie, but because the 1982 version made me laugh more than the 1951 version. Besides, it takes a lot of hutzpa to do something so bad twice. Join in the REMAKES BLOGFEST FUN. See what other remakes people are choosing.
Keep your eye out for the next Insecure Writers Support Group anthology. The stories are on their way to the judges, and before you know it, you’ll be able to read a collection of spine-chilling tales. TICK TOCK. The clock’s ticking toward another anthology for your reading pleasure.
I have a bit of news. I returned from France to find that one of my more literary stories had won a place in an anthology called Lost. And it was a Judge’s Pick. They notified me that the publication date is early December. I’ve always thought about taking a creative writing course, but I’ve never gotten around to it. Now I’m more motivated.
Remember to take a look at L.X. Cain’s Bloodwalker. It will give you some chilling moments all along the way to the end. If you don’t have time to read it right now, add it to your Goodreads‘ list and read it later.

FRANCE, continued. This was going to be a very different kind of trip. The barge down the Canal Du Midi was the first leg of our journey, and will always be memorable. It started in Carcassonne, a medieval city with the prerequisite castle (LaCité) and moat–dry, but a moat, nonetheless.
How exciting to stroll along walls built in Roman times, then fortified in the 13th and 14th centuries. We explored the city and hiked up to La Cité a couple of times. There was too much to see for only one visit. The canal waited and looked quite inviting from the bridge.
Alexa says
Wow, this is so cool! I’d love to see a medieval city sometime!
And congratulations on the story!!! 😀

C. Lee McKenzie says
Hi Mark. Thanks. Great to hear from you.
Julie Flanders says
Oh wow, congratulations on Lost! What a wonderful surprise for you to come home to.
Love all of the pics and a big agree on Lexa’s Bloodwalker. Such a creepy and great read!
Your new site looks awesome, Lee!
C. Lee McKenzie says
Glad you like my new digs. I’m still working out the kinks. Lexa’s story was quite a tale!
Mike@bitaboutbritain says
Wonderful news about ‘Lost’ – huge congrats!! Love France – not been to Carcassonne, though it’s somewhere I’d love to go. Enjoyed your photos. I can’t remember seeing ‘The Thing’ (either version) but I do remember my mother playing a Danny Kaye record of that title … 🙂
C. Lee McKenzie says
A Danny Kaye song of The Thing? That’s interesting. Never heard about that.
Thomas Anderson says
Hi, Cheryl-Lee!
I have seen both film versions of The Thing. They are among my favorites of the genre. Congratulations to you for the honor of having one of your stories selected for use in an upcoming anthology.
I envy you for having the opportunity to explore a medieval castle in France, examine the architecture including those ancient Gargoyles, cruise the canals and enjoy “scrummy” cuisine at local eateries. I too would have devoured every bite on that dish of vegetarian delights.
I returned to blogging today. Thank you very much for reaching out to me with kind and comforting words during my bereavement.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I’m glad you’re back, but know this has been a trying time you and your family. These are the times when we need our friends and family near. I know you have that.
Shannon Lawrence says
Congratulations on Lost!
C. Lee McKenzie says
A nice surprise. Thanks, Shannon.
J.H. Moncrieff says
Ah, France. Sigh…I admit to being a tad envious. You know how I love to travel, but I suspect I’ll be “grounded” for a while, due to my change in circumstances.
Congrats on winning a place in the anthology! That’s awesome news. And well deserved, I must say.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I’m kind of excited to see the other stories that are included. I don’t know any of the writers so far.
Stephen Tremp says
Nice place change is good. The Thing with Kurt Russell is still one of my favorite movies of all time. A true classic.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I never saw the Kurt Russel version, or did I? I’m sure I would have remembered.
Hilary Melton-Butcher says
Hi Lee – congratulations on ‘Lost’ … that’s great. While your Carcassone trip looks completely wonderful – a place I’ve always wanted to visit … cheers Hilary
C. Lee McKenzie says
It’s a great place to walk and experience. Very vibrant city, but very exciting history as well. I loved the castle and the areas around it.
Sharon Himsl says
Welcome back and congratulations on the award! That canal ride sure looked pleasant.
Liz A. says
I believe my father made me see that movie. (He made me see a lot of movies in that era.) Interesting choice.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Those parents. They make us suffer sometimes, don’t they?
Toi Thomas says
Congratulations on the anthology. That’s so cool.
Nice pick for the remake; I think that movie is pretty popular in the fest.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I know. I never would have thought The Thing would reappear as popular.
Natalie Aguirre says
Congrats on the anthology. That’s so awesome. Funny that you picked the Thing for your remake choice. I think someone else did too.
Your food pictures are making me hungry. I may have to go find some food. Ha! Ha!
C. Lee McKenzie says
Several of us pick this cumbersome-not so-horror flick. I was surprised! They’re making me hungry, too. I’d give anything to have that salad tonight!
Sandra Ulbrich Almazan says
I have to admit I haven’t watched either version of the movie.
Congrats on the anthology!
L. Diane Wolfe says
Thank you again for featuring Lexa’s book.
Congrats on the short story scoring Judge’s Pick.
I’ve never seen the first movie. I heard the creature looks like a giant carrot.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I’m surprised you’re out on the blogs today. Do you never sleep? But thanks for the visit. Appreciate it.
Diane Burton says
Considering how many people have mentioned The Thing, I guess I’ll have to watch it–both versions. Congrats on the Award.
Juneta says
The Thing was never my thing so never saw it. Congrats on the win in the anthology Wahoo. Hugs Juneta
C. Lee McKenzie says
Hi Juneta!
Thanks so much. The Thing isn’t really my thing either. We should eat popcorn together in a different movie.
Jemi Fraser says
Yay on the story – that’s awesome!!
Love your reasoning on The Thing Remake! It’s been a while since I’ve seen it but I remember laughing too 🙂
C. Lee McKenzie says
Laughing in a horror flick is so bad, isn’t it? Let’s be bad together.
HR Sinclair says
Congratulations!
What a beautiful trip. I love the pics. And good choice for the remake.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Great to see you, Sinclair, and thanks for the good wishes.
Carrie-Anne says
Congratulations on having your story chosen for publication and honored so highly! I also like your pictures.

C. Lee McKenzie says
Thanks, Beverly. Glad you’ve read and enjoyed Lexa’s book. And glad you like the pictures. Finally, someone who will endure my vacation photos!

Congratulations on the Judges Pick. No doubt richly deserved.
Loved your pictures of France.

C. Lee McKenzie says
I’m still wondering about this site. It gives me fits when I put together a post. I have some figuring out to do. Thank you for your visit.
Christine Rains says

C. Lee McKenzie says
Let’s hope there aren’t too many more!

Thank you for sharing part of France with us! Looks like you had a great time.

The Thing is popular today!
Thank you for joining our blogfest today!!!

C. Lee McKenzie says
I found a lot of great movie ideas when I traveled around to the sites. Some I didn’t even know had remakes. Good way to catch up on what’s going on out there in the world of entertainment.
Nick Wilford says
Congrats on the acceptance! Great news to come back to. And the sights in France look beautiful.
We’re going to have a great anthology on our hands!
C. Lee McKenzie says
I think it will be fun to have stories about a ticking clock. Those are always exciting.
Spacerguy says
Congratulations on the judges accolade for your story C. Lee – The Thing was one of those movies that got us shook up first time round when we saw it, fun to watch but scary! Looking forward to the remake now.
C. Lee McKenzie says
From what Shah says, there’s one as recent as 2011!
Patricia Lynne says
Congrats on the story.
I’m so jealous of you getting to go to France. Maybe one day I’ll get to. *sigh*
C. Lee McKenzie says
I hope you do get to go, Patricia. I know you’d have a great time.
Alex J. Cavanaugh says
Amazing photos.
Congratulations on the story!
And you couldn’t pick a better remake than The Thing.
Thanks for participating in the blogfest.
C. Lee McKenzie says
It guess several of us thought the same about that movie!
Shah Wharton says
France is a lovely place although I haven’t been in years.
Haven’t seen Lexa around for a while. Is she back from her hiatus? Need to hop over to seen her. All her books are awesome. She’s a fine writer of dark words. 🙂
The Thing – theres a newer version now 2011. Much better but still not the best and still called The Thing. Sigh!
Shah. X
C. Lee McKenzie says
Another one? Aren’t there any good new stories? 🙂
France is worth the visit. I really enjoyed it this time, even more than before when I stay mostly in the north. Love the south.
Jacqui Murray says
The Thing–that’s an inspired choice. First off, what kind of a name is that–and twice? I gather it goes downhill from there!
C. Lee McKenzie says
I was always curious how Hawks got involved in that project. He was touted as a big time director, but maybe The Thing happened before his fame.
Nilanjana Bose says
Congrats on the Judges’ Pick award! How cool is that?!
The photos look very enticing, like France. And with yours, that’s three recos I have for The Thing – must check it out!
C. Lee McKenzie says
I can’t say I’m really recommending it. I’m pathetic when it comes to naming or talking about movies. The Thing must have stuck in my mind for how scary it was? No. Maybe for how terrible it was.
Michelle Gregory says
after reading just a few of the remakes entries, i’m remembering more remakes that i like. two that come to mind are Pride and Prejudice with Kiera Knightly, and the newest BBC version of Sense and Sensibility.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I know. I’m finding all kinds of remakes today that I couldn’t think of before!
Michelle Gregory says
oh yeah… and France someday here.
Arlee Bird says
Nice photos from France. I doubt that I’ll ever go, but who knows? Maybe I’ll win a trip or something.
Congratulations on the accolades for your story!
What’s with The Thing fixation today? This is the third mention I’ve seen, but it is a good pick. I really need to watch that remake since it’s been several years since I last saw it. TCM shows the original often so I’ve seen that a couple times in the last few years.

Tossing It Out
C. Lee McKenzie says
I just couldn’t think of anything else. I’m not a big movie goer, so this wasn’t the easiest of hops to “hop” into. 🙁
Tamara Narayan says
Thanks for sharing the pictures. That looks like a fabulous trip.
I love Bloodwalkers. Great book.
The Thing was one of my favorite movies when I was younger. I love scary and gory things back then. These days a gory movie or TV show has to have a good story to keep my interest.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Maturity! I love a good story, too. Glad you enjoyed Bloodwalker and my pictures.
Pat Hatt says
Sure lots on the go and to see and eat that day. The Thing is a great one indeed.
C. Lee McKenzie says
The title of that movie is probably the worst one I’ve ever seen! And they used it twice–almost the same anyway.
Michelle Wallace says
Congrats on scoring the Judge’s Pick for your ‘more literary’ story! Maybe you’ll be working on a literary novel next?
Love the France pics! The medieval setting with those gargoyles, the barge and the moat… very atmospheric…
C. Lee McKenzie says
I love reading literary, so it was fun giving it a shot. Glad you’re enjoying the pictures from France.
