Since self-abuse is what Sliding on the Edge is about, I sometimes have a hard time answering questions like, “What inspired you to write your story?” Unfortunately, the fact that nearly 1 in 5 students at prestigious colleges report some form of purposeful injury, makes the hopeful word “inspired” inappropriate.
“Shocked into writing” the story is more like it. What can be wrong in a society that drives young people to cut, or burn, or inflict pain on themselves? What can be so terrible in their lives that makes the slice of a blade or the flame of a match preferable?
