It’s hot. It’s dry. I’m stressed to the max about any number of things that seem important right now, but probably won’t next month. All of this is to say I could not think of anything I wanted to blog about today. Until I took a break and read a magazine. And, guess what? I found stuff I wanted to share.
Totally Random and Almost Useless Facts:
- A group of jellyfish is called a “smack.”
- A large river hippo can open its mouth wide enough to fit a four-foot child.
- The life span of a taste bud is about 10 days.
- Dixon Ticonderoga Company produces approximately .5 billion pencils annually.
- It took 101 days for the Pilgrims to sail from Southhampton, England to Plymouth, Mass in 1620.
Psyche:
I seldom do any reviews of TV anything, but I discovered a show called Psych that actually made me laugh. It’s on Netflix (I gave up on TV years ago), so you’ve probably seen it and forgotten you did. If you missed it, give it a try. Dule Hill and James Roday are a riot together. And Corbin Bernsen is his usual “interesting” self in the role of Dad.
Quote of the Week: “Most of American life is driving somewhere, and then driving back wondering why the hell you went.” John Updike
Are you ready for fall to kick in? Any random facts that you care to share? Know about Psyche?

Interesting facts. I also gave up on TV. I DVR movies and watch many things on Amazon.
Hilary Melton-Butcher says
Hi Lee – hippos are amazing and very frightening – they are incredibly fast in water. I love useless facts .. always checking them out .. these are good – the smack, a taste bud …
I haven't seen Psych … but now you've told me – one day! Cheers Hilary
Alexa S. Winters says
I used to love Psych! I haven't watched it in forever, but yeah, that show is pretty hilarious! Juliet was probably my favorite character. Her and Corbin Bernsen's character. Lol, they were awesome!
Interesting facts, btw! I especially like the one about the taste buds. I literally had no idea.

I love useless facts because they are not useless but interesting. Yesterday I picked up a Nat. Geographic magazine about interesting facts. I didn't buy it but looked through it and right in there they showed a child superimposed over a hippos open mouth. I had no idea it's mouth was that big. I have never even heard of that show but it sounds funny. I just don't have netflix
Golden Eagle says
I am definitely ready for fall to be here. Summer's been nice, but I love the cooler temperatures and approaching holiday atmosphere!
I've heard good things about Psych, in addition to this post. Will have to check it out sometime.
S.K. Anthony says
Hmm… I wonder if that's why a "smacking" someone is so effective LOL
OMG I've caught a few episodes of Psych, they're awesome! I should do a binge watch on Netflix soon!
Sherry Ellis says
I was really wondering about the lifespan of a taste bud! ;0)
Joylene Nowell Butler says
Seems to me Dule Hill got his start on The West Wing. I miss that show; and I'm Canadian. Thanks for your randomness, Karen!
Joylene Nowell Butler says
Lee–sorry. I was just at Karen's blog before I arrived at yours.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I answer to Karen! I love the name. No problem, Joylene. I can relate.
Melissa says
I caught a few of those shows. Funny. 🙂
Lexa Cain says
I think one of the main traits of being a writer is an insatiable curiosity for random facts! I know I have oodles of useless knowledge at my fingertips. I really enjoy Psyche. It's like the old Hardy Boys and Scooby Doo adventures where the situation seem incredible, but it all has a reasonable explanation at the end. Have a great week, Lee! 🙂
Michael Di Gesu says
Hi, Lee,
I remember Psyche! It was a fun show! Thanks for the FUN info… you never know when we may get the urge to write about SMACK.. LOL.
Funny, I just bought a twelve pack of pencils… sketching out a new design for a very picky client… me. LOL.
Denise Covey says
Down Under we're ready for winter to end and spring to arrive in all its gorgeousness. Never heard of Psych. Glad you like it. I enjoy learning random facts too. Always fun.

Enjoyed reading your random facts. Now I want to write a story about a hippo 🙂
Jay Noel says
A smack??? Really???
Psych is a show that I've only caught a couple episodes and wished I had followed. My friends love Psych, and I will probably binge watch it.
Patricia Lynne says
Thanks for the facts. I can now say I learned something today.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Yay! Back to school. That's about what I learned during all those years. Except they lead me into more reading, so that was really important.
Pat Hatt says
Hippos sure have a big yap. Psych is an awesome show. Watched every episode twice here.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I figured you'd be a Psych fan. It's such a hoot!
Beverly Stowe McClure says
Interesting facts. One never knows when they might come in handy. 🙂
I like the fall, the cooler weather, the approaching holidays.
I watch very little TV either.
Have a great week.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Thanks, Beverly. One good thing about these hot days is we can eat outside late. Very nice.
Kelly Hashway says
I'm not ready for fall yet. I'm still enjoying summer.
C. Lee McKenzie says
You're right. Don't rush it. But it is egg-frying hot outside again today.
Karen Jones Gowen says
Random facts like that are so interesting at the time and then I forget them! Psych is a show my boys were addicted to for awhile, watching the episodes for hours at a time on You Tube. I never really got into it since I was busy doing other things but I should give it another try.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Or not. It's just a diversion for me after my brain's fried from blogging and writing and trying to figure out if we have something in fridge for dinner.
T. Powell Coltrin says
I watched it a couple times and remember it was good, but don't remember the show. Old age. Sorry you are stressed.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Self-imposed stress, so I could choose to eliminate it, but then what would I do with my life?
Yvonne Ventresca says
Murder of crows is still my favorite "group" word.
I do love fall, but am trying to enjoy these hot summer days!
Yvonne
C. Lee McKenzie says
I understand the Murder of Crows. They are horrid birds around here.
DEZMOND says
and a group of dragons is called a thunder of dragons 🙂
C. Lee McKenzie says
I like that. I can imagine the sound.
sage says
I like the Updike quote. Haven't seen Psych, but lately (thanks to a book I read) I have started watching old episodes of "6 Feet Under"
C. Lee McKenzie says
I've only seen a few of those. They kind of creeped me out, but I'm older now. Maybe I can take it.
DMS says
All those random facts are fascinating. Beautiful picture of the jellyfish too. 🙂
I gave up on TV too (and saved a ton of money). Netflix for me all the way- so I will have to check out Psych!
~Jess
C. Lee McKenzie says
Oh, yes! It may give you ideas for those riddles.
Cherie Reich says
I am a Psych-o. I own all the seasons of Psych and the TV tie-in books. I miss that show so much.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Yay! I'm finding all kinds of kindred spirits.
Dianne K. Salerni says
A smack of jellyfish, huh?
I discovered Psych on Netflix this past spring. My daughters and I ended up watching straight through all 8 seasons in less than a month!
And thanks for sharing about the size of a hippo's mouth. In Brandon Mull's first Beyonders book, the protagonist falls into a hippo's mouth at the zoo and lands in a fantasy world. Now I know he really could've fit in there. 😉
C. Lee McKenzie says
I'll be Mull found that fact and that was the genesis of his story! Now what shall we do with that Smack of jellyfish?
Shooting Stars Mag says
I love random f acts – thanks for sharing!!
Also, I LOVE Psych. It's seriously the one show I watched from when it first aired till the end. It's my favorite. 🙂
-Lauren
C. Lee McKenzie says
Yipee another fan!
Yolanda Renee says
I love useless facts, but I never remember them once I've read them so I can't add to your list. Although my son says that – the Roman's used to make toothpaste from urine. Catfish are the only animals that naturally have an odd number of whiskers, and Your ribs move about 5 million times a year every time you breathe. He's handy to have around sometimes.
My husband loved Psych, I got tired of it as the star seemed to get sillier,
Have a great day!
C. Lee McKenzie says
Now those are some facts! I'm making note of them for the future. You never know when you'll need a fact or two.
Mason Canyon says
Amazing facts. Way more pencils made than I would have guessed. I've watched a few episodes of Psyche and found it funny too.
C. Lee McKenzie says
And here I thought the computer would put a dent in the pencil business. Wonder what they produced prior to the advent of the keyboard fixation?
Chrys Fey says
Those are some interesting, useless facts. Poor little taste buds. Maybe that's why something can taste good one day and bed the next. lol
C. Lee McKenzie says
I wonder. And do we grow new ones just a quickly?
Bish Denham says
I'll have to check out Psyche. Good comedies are hard to come by.
Totally useless and random fact: Romans used to make toothpaste from urine.
What?
I'm sort of ready for fall, but not really, because that means winter is just around the corner and the Farmer's Almanac is saying it's going to particularly cold this year…
C. Lee McKenzie says
Oye! Urine? I wonder how their dental plans read.
We're in for El Nino, according to the forecasters. I'm really tired of this roller coaster weather.
Sarah Foster says
I hope no one's actually putting four foot children into a hippo's mouth to figure these things out…
C. Lee McKenzie says
Now that's a scary thought.
Susan Gourley/Kelley says
I've watched Psyche on and off over the years. I'm not really ready for fall. I wouldn't mind another month of summer and the heat. I did know what a group of Jellyfish are called. And who is using all those pencils?
Susan Says
C. Lee McKenzie says
You actually knew they were called a Smack? That's remarkable. As to the pencils, I haven't a clue.
Angela Brown says
Random facts can be so entertaining, but not as entertaining as Psych. I've watched it before and must say it would be worth watching every episode from the beginning. *goes to add this Netflix list*
C. Lee McKenzie says
I love Netflix for that reason. You can binge if you feel like it.
Christine Rains says
I'm totally ready for fall! And a smack of jellyfish. I must use that somewhere!
C. Lee McKenzie says
Exactly on both counts.
Blogoratti says
Psych is a delightful series to watch. And thanks for sharing those random facts. Greetings!
C. Lee McKenzie says
Glad you enjoyed the facts, and interesting see how many have seen and like Psych.
TBM says
Never considered the life span of a taste bud.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Before yesterday, neither did I!
Murees Dupé says
I wonder what happens to the taste buds after they die. Where do they go? Do we get rid of them when we brush our teeth/tongue? Thank you for these facts. I love learning new things. My sister loves Psyche. Have a great week.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Proper burial?
Alex J. Cavanaugh says
Big fan of the show! never missed an episode.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I'm hooked!
Heather R. Holden says
A smack of jellyfish? Love that! It's always fun to learn little facts like this… 🙂
C. Lee McKenzie says
I wonder who come up with these? A gaggle of geese?
