Part of my reconnecting with the world around me is to read ever more widely again. This week I found a slightly dated copy of The Atlantic, but when I opened it, the topic was anything but dated. Here’s the essence of that article by Stephen Marche. Thanks to texting, facebook, Google+, and Twitter, Americans now live in a web of connection in which we can reach everyone we know in just a fraction of a second. Yet for all this connectivity, we have never been more detached from one another, or lonelier. If you’re interested in reading the article, HERE it is. It starts with a shudder, so if you write things macabre, take a look. There’s a book in this.

Quote for the Day:
โThere are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.โ – W. Somerset Maugham
Do you enter to win books? If so, what books are you winning? Any recommendations? How do you feel about being part of this “connected-isolated” group of Americans? Or, do you disagree with the premise of the article?
The Golden Eagle says
I second Medeia–most of the time I win things by accident. Though I try to pay attention and not enter myself into stuff that involves physical prizes.
It's sad that so many people connect via screen instead of real human interaction.
M Pax says
I won an ARC off Twitter once from Tor. Great quote and so true.
Catherine Stine says
Love the quotes! I agree that we can easily get disconnected. It's all the more reason to schedule face time, whether it be lunch with a friend or a movie. I just did a writing retreat, which was very reenergizing.
Darby Karchut says
I am in awe of your reading regiment.
Medeia Sharif says
We are connected-isolated. Yes, I've seen and felt it.
I tend to accidentally enter to win books by commenting. I get surprise emails telling me I've won things. Only sometimes do I intentionally enter. I'm drowning in books, so I don't enter too many contests.
DMS says
What an interesting article. It made me think of Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult about an Amish community. In it one of the characters reveals his thoughts about the Western World and technology.
Great book info! ๐

Tyrean Martinson says
That sounds like an interesting article, and a good idea for a story at the same time. Hmm.
Samantha May says
That is pretty sad ๐
I still remember the day we even got a computer. That was pretty exciting!
I love that quote about novel writing rules. It's just so true isn't it?
nutschell says
sounds like a great giveaway! will be sure to check it out!

Love that quotation of the day. My three rules for writing a novel are one rule repeated three times: Don't write about writing- write THE NOVEL…
Like now.
C. Lee McKenzie says
@Angela and @Angela To the first Angela, it's great to be in your giveaway and, to the second, I'm going to get that movie!
@Barbara @ Laura @Susan @Elise @Jemi @Lyn @Kern I'm always amazed at those texting peeps on the hiking trail.
@Hilary I think you're going to love that Kindle. It won't replace your hardcopies, but it will enhance your reading experience.
@Tammy Thanks for the follow!
Tammy Theriault says
i'm so there for a giveaway, new follower, hi!!
Kern Windwraith says
Love the Somerset Maugham quote–a long-time favourite. The one from the Atlantic is depressing, but I think you're right that there's a story lurking in there. ๐
Carrie Butler says
Talk about awesome prizes! ๐ Thanks for sharing, Lee!
J.L. Campbell says
Hi, Lee,
Thanks for dropping in on me. The Emotion Thesaurus sounds like a useful tool.
Jemi Fraser says
I remember an episode of Sliders from several years back where they traveled to another reality of earth. the last 2 humans were playing each other in a video game turned real, but didn't have a clue how to interact with each other. Powerful messages in there. And I see the results of this lessening ability to interact every day in the classroom!
Natalie Aguirre says
Awesome your book is one of the prizes. And those are big milestones Angela and Becca achieved.
Elise Fallson says
Oh great quote. And I'm going to have to look into this giveaway! I often wonder how people are going to connect with each other in 20, 40 years. It is sad that people feel more disconnected. I know I've lost touch with a lot of friends, but because of the internet, I'm able to video chat with my father (who lives far away)at least once a week, and that means the world to me.
Susan Gourley/Kelley says
I agree with the quote about writing. As far as technology and social media causing us to be disconneted, I think it's in how you use it.
LynNerdKelley says
I believe that article is true, sad to say. Thanks for the heads up on The Bookshelf Muse's milestone. How cool that you're offering your awesome book to help celebrate!
Beth says
I like that quote.
Ruth Schiffmann says
Oooo, I love giveaways. Thanks so much for the heads up!
michelle says
Thanks for the reminder about the e-books giveaway. I'm off to The Bookshelf Muse now———
Kelly Hashway says
Love the quote! ๐
Laura Eno says
I like macabre! Must go look.
We've lost our ability to connect with a physical presence – or even talking by voice. It seems to all be text now.
Hilary Melton-Butcher says
Hi Lee .. wonderful yours and Alex' books are part of the Give Away .. I must get my Kindle sorted – now I'm feeling better and able to concentrate!
I really want to get the Emotion Thesaurus too …
Communicating is an art form, some are more natural .. and some can't be bothered, or don't realise what to do … interaction = the essential to life ..
Cheers Hilary
Barbara Watson says
How fun that your book's in the giveaway!
And it is odd, isn't it? We're so connected but yet so not.
Angela Brown says
Just the idea of the article brings the movie Wall-E to mind. How all those folks were connected with one word, yet so distant they had no idea of how to really interact with each other.
I saw your book as part of the giveaway. Three thumbs up (Yeah, gotta borrow someone else's for that one lol!!!)
Angela Ackerman says
Thanks for the shout out, Lee! I am happy to have your book up there, and someone will be lucky to win it!
Angela
C. Lee McKenzie says
@Alex It is super that we're both there!
@Al It will be just the right touch for the Dragon Cave.
Al Diaz says
The quote of the day will be my favorite quote from now on. I'll frame it and hang it in the main chamber at the Dragon Cave, so I never forget it. ๐
Alex J. Cavanaugh says
I don't even need to read the article to know that. Sad, isn't it?
Cool our books are among the prizes, isn't it?
