This year I traveled to Cuba. You know, it’s that little island that’s spitting distance from Florida and should not be visited without special dispensation. I wanted to see it before MacDonald’s arrived. I’m so glad I did. I learned a lot and I met some wonderful people. It seems they like us. Now there’s a change!
I’ll add a short T/F quiz to each post the same as I did last year about Burma, and I’ll post the answers to the questions the following day.
No Answers today. No quiz for F:
Guantánamo |
It does provide access for Cubans wanting to immigrate to the the U.S. Remember my letter D, Dry Foot Policy? One Cuban I spoke with told me about her cousin who trained for over a year to swim long distances in open water. She made it to GITMO and was granted immigrant status.

Photographs awesome. Enjoyed all of them. Really like your pond. And your comment about being a terse writer … so am I, and was sometimes criticized for this in my memoir. Poetry is good for terse writers. Your haiku is excellent.
Katie L. Carroll says
The terse poetry really works for me. I love your garden and the poem about it! Definitely some interesting facts about Guantanamo.
Medeia Sharif says
I didn't know much about Guantanamo until reading this. I like your pond.
Natasha Duncan-Drake says
That is a most odd set-up – I suppose all countries have eccentric relationships with some of their neighbours. 🙂

LOVE the pond. I've always been wildly curious about Cuba. I'm glad you got to go. Gorgeous pic.

Love your little pond/garden. So pretty.
Yvonne Ventresca says
Wow, imagine training to swim for that.
Love your pond, BTW.

I have no idea, and no brain power to even guess.
Interestingly enough, my mother just got back from Cuba day before yesterday!
I too love your pretty pond!

Lovely pond! Looks relaxing. Gitmo should be closed, period. This feud is well past it's reasoning. I'm glad to see things changing!
Beverly Stowe McClure says
Your pond looks so refreshing and inspiring. What a great spot to sit and dream up new stories. When I hear what some people have to go through to come to America it makes me appreciate what I take for granted every day. Have a nice weekend.
Stephen Tremp says
I think I've gotten all of your trivia answers wrong. And Cuba is so close to us. Its time to invest in Cuba and help it become a developed country. So many things wrong there that should not be.
Mary Aalgaard says
Oh, my gosh. Can you imagine training for such an important reason. If you make it, you have freedom. If not, you're dead. And, it is also taking a risk that they will help you. I thought they were going to close GITMO? What an amazing trip you had.

Beautiful little pond!
Interesting stuff about Guantánamo. I had no idea.
Lexa Cain says
Embarrassingly, I had no idea Gitmo was actually on Cuban soil. I assumed it was an island off the coast. I hope it gets shut down. It's not in line with modern humanitarian views; it barely even seems legal. Both your t/f seem true to me. Have a lovely weekend! 🙂

I like your garden spot. I can see you there. Until we move I have view of lake out of my bedroom window. I love that.

If I am not mistaken number 1 is false and 2 is true. I was surprised to find out that the USA pays only $4000,00 to lease that part of land. I think that is way too cheap.

I love haiku…and other poetry forms.
Actually, poetry is my first love but has since been ousted by flash fiction…
$4000 isn't a lot in your money. However, if I convert to my money…that's another story…

I'm guessing that Guantánamo is the oldest U.S. military base outside U.S. territory. I love your pond and I love haiku. Lucky you to have some place to contemplate and not be bothered by children. All the best!

Wow, is it ever beautiful! It's too bad the Cubans don't benefit from it.
Your garden is insanely gorgeous. How long did it take you to have it set up the way you wanted it?
sage says
You have a nice garden. I can't think of an older US base off US soil, but they may be one as back then we needed coaling bases for ships. I don't think TR established the base–he was a commander of a small group there but not the overall commander (but he publicized himself enough to become VP and then President)

I think they may be closing it down…I thought I just heard that but could be wrong….and often am. I feel like saying false to the first and true to the 2nd…..
Pat Hatt says
$4000? Damn, that's cheap. Maybe they want more so send it back haha probably not. True for #2.
