Ossification
Relative. A Bony Headed Lizard |
There have been times during these writing spurts I suffer, that I’m sure my brain has hardened into a bony mass. Brain Ossification is the worst when I’m in the middle of a story and suddenly I don’t have a clue where to take it next. What happens: sleepless nights, twitchy days and lots of pacing between the computer and the kitchen, where I seek solace from the refrigerator. It seems to be the only thing in the house that understands me.
Still ossification is a fabulous word with its hissy sibilant sounds. Do you suffer from ossification of the brain when you’re writing? If so, where do you go for help? Please don’t tell me you go to the refrigerator, too. But if that’s the case, whisper to me and tell me what your favorite comfort food is that you keep stashed there.

Hi Lee .. definitely ossification sets in occasionally, but ordinarily does not do so! Can quite understand the brain saying it's had enough – yes mine does talk at times!
Cheers Hilary
Medeia Sharif says
I like that word, but I've never used it before.
Lynda R Young says
You found a word I didn't know. I should've known it since I certainly suffer from it ๐
Kern Windwraith says
Ahaha! I love both the word and the image, and yes! Ossification does set in when I've immersed myself in writing for an extended period. My strategy is to walk the dog. There's always something interesting or amusing happening out there to help replenish the grey matter, and if the world won't oblige, my dog always will!
Carrie Butler says
I'm a big fan of walking around the kitchen, eating leftovers while I plot. It feels ever-so-slightly healthier. ๐
Rawknrobyn.blogspot.com says
Psst, chocolate. It's the best cure for ossification and anything else. You're welcome. =)

A change of scenery usually does the trick. Even curling up in front of the TV helps. Both scenarios always include snacks.

When I'm stuck, I listen to soundtrack music and munch on Annie's cheddar bunnies snack mix *damn Annie and her tempting cheesy pieces of heaven* One of two things will occur – I ingest far more than the recommended daily sodium allowance and promptly drown my failure in a gallon of water or my musical muse successfully unlocks my stubborn imagination:)
Nick Wilford says
A brisk walk can do wonders!
Christine Rains says
What a great word! I'm thinking of Voldemort trying to say it, silly as that is.

Hi, Lee…
With me… First BLOG… Then hit the cookie tin… Oh, no! Out if my fav. Biscotti….?bake a batch… Double… Over 49 delectable and crunchy delights!
Eat a few hot… Snarf up the crumbled ones… They don't count. Lol …. And finally …. HIT THE GYM for two plus hours to work off the cookies… Lol.
Actually exercise really helps clear your head! I've thought up amazing ideas in the eliptical!

That lizard is quite beautiful.
I can be quite obstinate about starting a new project. I think it's the blank document blinking at me. So, I coax myself with multiple projects – only writing short bursts for each. Then the mojo comes back after a week or so.
As to being stuck… workouts, showers, long emails to a friend, and whining to the Husband Unit usually work. Sometimes… not. Then I know I'm waiting for a whiff of inspiration. I'm not good at being patient for it either.
L. Diane Wolfe says
I try not to hit the fridge, but I will take a break.
Pk Hrezo says
yes it happens to me too and I lose the motivation. That tells me I need a break and I let myself off the hook for a day or two of just plain R$R. Sometimes watching movies or reading great books puts me right back in the saddle. Other times, only time away helps.
Samantha May says
I'm pretty sure school does this to me. So glad I'm almost done ๐

You are right, it's quite a hissy word..LOL Hmm let see where I find solace I'm suffering from brain ossification.. Other than wrangling with the refrigerator, I want lots of movies.
J.L. Campbell says
Lee, I guess this might be one of the reasons I write several books at a time. I'm easily bored, but I don't while writing because I always have something that I should be finishing. All the same, my favourite thing from the refrigerator would be cheesecake. Love that stuff!

Ooh-la-la it's O-Day!
Mmm… my brain feels partially ossified at the moment!
I think I'll do some reading after this…

Having trouble leaving a comment. Darn iPad!
My brain in in a state of ossification all the time. Yes, I go to the fridge, too, usually for ice cream but we're out of it now and I'm trying not to keep it in the house. No willpower. Fun post, Lee!
Jaycee DeLorenzo says
Unfortunately, I usually go for the food. ๐
C. Lee McKenzie says
Yay! My kind of writer.
Natalie Aguirre says
I hate those times. I tend to go to candy and other sweets that aren't in the fridge during those periods. Wish I didn't.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Fortunately, my husband downs all of the candy before I have a chance at it. He saves me!
Elizabeth Seckman says
I so hate it when the fridge is my only friend! Why doesn't the treadmill call out to me as loudly?
C. Lee McKenzie says
Now see, you're ahead of me there. I don't even have a treadmill.
Nancy Jardine says
Yep! I love the word ossification. I definitely have ossification but at my age they call it soemthing nice like 'the onset of senile dementia'- ie when I stare at my screen every day and say what was that word again? That ONE word that will encapsulate all I want to say in this whole sentence! ๐ When in doubt use a 'smiley face' Nancy at Welcome to she said, he said
C. Lee McKenzie says
Hi Nancy. Maybe we share the same affliction. Oh well, there's always a dictionary when all else fails. Thanks for the visit today.
Bish Denham says
When my brain starts to ossify I bury my nose in a book.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Good idea!
DEZMOND says
This is the first time I hear about the word, I shall try to memorize it ๐
C. Lee McKenzie says
Just don't let it happen to you, Dez!
Alex J. Cavanaugh says
I don't go to the fridge. I'll either play my guitar or go watch a movie. Although once I begin writing, I usually don't get stuck. Must come from spending months on the plot and outline.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Great strategies!
