Seismic Crimes
My Review
Loma Prieta
Chry Fey’s story takes place very close to where I live and rings quite true from my experience. October 17, 1989 the Loma Prieta 6.9 quake hit our mountain area hard because we live on that bad boy called the San Andreas Fault.
One day I need to write about that, but in the meantime, Chrys has written a story that captures the power, the shock and the reality of a California earthquake–one that takes place in a city of tall buildings and steep hills. A city called San Francisco.

Oh! Is LA really moving towards SF? Thanks for all these interesting info.

Holy cow! I forgot to pop back in because things have been so hectic, and now I'm shocked at how many comments there are. WOW!
THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!! I appreciate all of your awesome comments. C.Lee has the best readers and visitors. 😀
(I decided to cheat this time instead of replying back to each one I missed. Forgive me.)
C. Lee McKenzie says
You're forgiven. I have to do the same thing! Out of time is my excuse. But so glad people popped in to see your Featured post and respond.
Kathleen Valentine says
Every now and then we feel rumblings here on the North Shore and it is always unnerving. Once, when I lived in Marblehead, I looked out the kitchen window in time to see all the lights on the other side of the harbor shake for just a few seconds. It's unnerving to say the least.
Chrys Fey says
It would unnerve me, too! Thanks for sharing your experiences, Kathleen.
Nicola says
Great facts. I've heard on the news that the scientists are worried about another biggy in California. Hope they're wrong.
Chrys Fey says
I hope so, too, but they seem pretty adamant that it's going to happen *gulp*
Sherry Ellis says
Interesting facts about earthquakes. I wonder when the next big one will hit California.
C. Lee McKenzie says
They have projections. I'm counting.
Crystal Collier says
I just watched San Andreas with the family. Yeah, yeah, I know it's a HUGE exaggeration, but the magnitude of natures destructive forces are awe inspiring. Yay for Chrys!
C. Lee McKenzie says
I was looking at a magazine article about the San Andreas and recognized that one of the photos was taken below my house near the creek.
Shannon Lawrence says
We get minor quakes along the Front Range (mountains) here, but a lot of people don't believe it's true. There's so much upheaval, I'm surprised it's so hard for them to believe.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I've read that we have constant tremors, but they're too small to detect.
Joylene Nowell Butler says
We get earthquakes here in central BC. I grew up on the coast of BC, so we had them regularly. It's a scary moment when they first begin and you don't quite know how powerful they'll be. Great post, Chrys.
C. Lee McKenzie says
The first rock and roll is always interesting. Will this be all? Will the next few moments suddenly erupt into a major jolt? It doesn't take long, but it seems like forever.
emaginette says
When I lived in Vancouver, BC, earthquakes were definitely on my mind. It's less shaky in the interior. hehehe

C. Lee McKenzie says
They're never far from mine. That's for sure.
Annalisa Crawford says
I think earthquakes are a great reminder that no matter what damage we do to our planet, it can do far worse to us.
C. Lee McKenzie says
A perfect quote, Annalisa.
J.H. Moncrieff says
I've yet to experience an earthquake. I think I should consider myself lucky.
Best of luck to Chrys with her new release!
C. Lee McKenzie says
Yes you should. They're heart stoppers.
Liz A. says
Ah, earthquakes. Being in SoCal, I'm familiar. (I remember watching the 1989 one on TV. Glad I missed out on it.)
C. Lee McKenzie says
Yep. That guy was not fun.
Birgit says
Congrats on your new novel and being showcased here:) I have felt. Couple of earthquakes and it's really weird. They were small but I could see the rolling effect in the brickwork at my office.
C. Lee McKenzie says
It's the groaning and creaking and sometimes the big bump that shoots my heart rate to high.
Beverly Stowe McClure says
Congratulations on your new novel, Chrys. Thanks for the information on earthquakes. I didn't know all that. Love the quote.
C. Lee McKenzie says
When LA slides by my window, I'm moving north.
Denise Covey says
That's a sombre quote in the light of the world ATM. Thanks for featuring Chrys, Clem. I'm looking forward to reading her latest!
C. Lee McKenzie says
I keep asking myself what I can do besides read and write about the WTM? I'm not much of a combatant, but I often wish I could strap on a gun and go fix a mess. The reality is I'd probably make it worse.
Karen Lange says
Nice to see Chrys here! Wishing her much success. The earthquake facts are interesting. Hoping that things stay quiet, especially for CA.

Congrats to Chrys! Need a new author photo, we've been seeing this one for a very long time, methinks 🙂
Chrys Fey says
You've only been following me during this tour, DEZMOND. haha It is an old picture, but during the time I've had it, none of my other blogger/author buddies have updated theirs.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Mine's older than Chrys' but I hate to change it.
Mark Noce says
Great topic! I vividly remember that quake:)
Chrys Fey says
Thanks for stopping by, Mark!
C. Lee McKenzie says
I lived in a camper in our driveway for six months after the '89 quake. We only our fireplace chimney, but the house remained sound. It was just that nothing was where it should be. The sorting and the clean up was huge.
L. Diane Wolfe says
We had an earthquake near here a few years ago and I completely missed it.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I like that when it happens.
Chrys Fey says
That's fortunate!
Elizabeth Varadan, Author says
Oh, what a great series this sounds like. I live in Sacramento, not too far from San Francisco, so anything to do with San Francisco interest me. And I love mysteries. Loved your ten facts about earthquakes. I also didn't realized that it had been finally decided Atlantis was swallowed up by earthquakes.
C. Lee McKenzie says
That certainly makes sense about Atlantis, doesn't it?
Chrys Fey says
Elizabeth, I'm glad you enjoyed this post. Yes, I've read many theories that it was earthquakes, but maybe with something like Atlantis it can't be 100% proven.
Christine Rains says
Yay for Chrys! 🙂 I've never experienced an earthquake, but the thunder last night really rattled the house!
C. Lee McKenzie says
That can be darned scary because you know there's lightning out there too.
Chrys Fey says
I've been in those kinds of thunderstorms. Not fun.
Juneta Key says
Great posts. Congrats on 2nd book.
Juneta @ Writer's Gambit
C. Lee McKenzie says
Thanks, Juneta.
Chrys Fey says
Thanks, Juneta!
Yolanda Renée says
Chrys is so talented and her books and the premise very exciting. Congratulations Chrys!
I've felt a earthquake in Alaska, Washington, and Pennsylvania – didn't like any of the incidents. Very scary when the ground under your feet isn't as 'solid' as you think.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I'm in northern CA near San Francisco, each time we get another earthquake LA moves closer.
Chrys Fey says
Hi, Yolanda! Thank you!! I can only imagine.
Bish Denham says
Yeah Chrys! Your books sound very interesting! Growing up in the Caribbean and living not far from a fault line, I've experienced many tremors. The only saving grace is that the fault is what they call a lateral or strike-slip fault that moves east/west. It inches along, releasing pressure causing tremors on daily basis, though the vast majority are never felt. However there have been some big quakes, one that even cause tsunamis, though not in my life-time. 🙂
C. Lee McKenzie says
Earthquakes are one solid reminder of just how vulnerable we are on this planet.
Chrys Fey says
The small tremors to release pressure is good, so there hopefully won't be a big quake.
nashvillecats2 says
Wonderful post Lee. I have been a follower of Chrys for a while now. A great asset to blogging.

Thanks, Yvonne. Glad you follow her.
Chrys Fey says
Hi, Yvonne! Thanks for commenting! 🙂

Congratulations Chrys and thanks for your promotion of her new story… I remember the year I lived in Virginia City, there were several small earthquakes but in one, which was about 5:30 AM, I was reading in bed, my back up against the wall, and it sounded like the groan of the devil from deep in earth as the walls shook. Simon Winchester's "A Crack at the Edge of the Earth" is a great book about the SF 1906 earthquake.
C. Lee McKenzie says
That's exactly what it sounds like. And when the aftershocks come, the sound coming through our forest was that of a massive tidal wave.
Chrys Fey says
"the groan of the devil from deep in earth" I got chills.
Pat Hatt says
Glad I'm far far away from San Francisco. Too bad they can't find something to help predict them with more accuracy.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Timing is the best indicator. We're supposedly off the hook for a few more years.
Chrys Fey says
The earth and nature is very unpredictable. Especially earthquakes. There could be subtle signs, but you just never know.
Alex J. Cavanaugh says
Only a matter of time before that earthquake hits San Francisco.
C. Lee McKenzie says
When I'm there, I often look up. No way would I want to be in the city when that happens.
Chrys Fey says
I fear you're right, Alex.
Nick Wilford says
Great to see Chrys here. I've read her other books but need to get on to these. If only they could pinpoint that Bay Area quake a bit more accurately.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Never going to happen, I'm afraid.
Chrys Fey says
It would be nice if they could, wouldn't it?
T. Powell Coltrin says
This sounds like an interesting setting and idea. I live near the New Madrid fault in MO. I've never felt a tremor but we've had them.
Your quote is spot on. I'm more worried about a nation of people who wait for someone else to right the wrongs than the wrongs done.
C. Lee McKenzie says
The quote struck me as well.
Chrys Fey says
You're fortunate, T. Powell. I hope you don't feel a quake or tremor.
