Let me Tell You A Story about my movie cast for Double Negative. This is my last post about this movie cast, so here’s one more character from the story, and I loved casting him.
Mathew McConaughey

Jimmy, Hutch’s dad, isn’t a bad guy, he’s just disillusioned by the cards he’s been dealt. When he realizes he can actually do something to help his son, he does.
Meet Jimmy!
So what’re we gonna do about this school thing, Hutch?” Dad’s “thing” still comes out “thang” even after twenty years living away from Texas.
I’m really enjoying stopping in at different blogs and seeing what they’re posting for this year’s A to Z. Here’s one that caught my attention, 55 Word Crime Stories. It’s very clever. Take a look. And if you like movies as well as the alphabet, by all means, visit BB Creations.
Tomato Report: It’s happening. Just look at all that potential. There’s a metaphor circling my cerebral cortex and I’m oh so tempted to break into metaphor right now. But I’ll spare you that. . .for today.
Quote of the Week: “Tomatoes and oregano make it Italian; wine and tarragon make it French. Sour cream makes it Russian; lemon and cinnamon make it Greek. Soy sauce makes it Chinese; garlic makes it good.” – Alice May Brock (I confess I know her not at all.)
In Double Negative some people get a second chance. Do you believe in giving second chances? Are you stopping by some A to Z bloggers and saying hi? Do I have you primed for a tomato feast? And who is Alice May Brock?
J.H. Moncrieff says
Wow, we're a long way from tomato season over here.
Congrats on surviving another A to Z Challenge!
Shooting Stars Mag says
Your tomatoes look to be coming in nice!!
As for second chances, sure, I believe in them. I think it depends on what the person had done though – but if I hadn't been open to second chances, I wouldn't have one of my best friends again.
Nas says
Thanks for mentioning other blogs. I've visited!
J Lenni Dorner says
“Alright, Alright, Alright.” 😉
(Which I'm pretty sure should be "all right" but it sounds more Philly this way. Not that he's from Philly. But anyway!)
I love tomatoes, but they sometimes don't love me. Ha ha. Heirlooms are amazing though.
I give second chances, sometimes even thirds. Depends on the offense. If it's a crime against children, no, don't count on that.
And yup, I've hit up lots of A to Z people. I live in comment mod Hell (that's an invisible place located in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, where the only food is Spam). But yup, I've been around commenting, as always.

Oh, sorry, first one to show up in the last 7 blogs. I got over excited. LOL.
Chrys Fey says
When I read "disillusioned" and saw Matthew McConaughey, I couldn't help but laugh. 😛
DMS says
I do believe in second chances. Sometimes they work out, sometimes they don't.
Love to see tomato plants growing. One of my favorite things about having a garden is the fresh tomatoes. I just adore them and eating them like apples is one of my favorite things. 🙂

I love that you're mentioning other blogs you visited in A to Z challenge on Your posts. Don't mind if I do. I will stop by 55 crime stories and BB creations. I will try and mention a couple blogs in my post tomorrow.

I need to do more. Have been so busy this week, but glad you liked the mentions of others.
Sherry Ellis says
I'm amazed that you have flowers on your tomatoes! That's great!
Yes, I believe in giving people second chances. Not sure about third or fourth, though.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I do small incantations over these guys daily.
Romance Reader says
Yes, garlic does make it good. In everything 🙂
C. Lee McKenzie says
How would we start a dinner without it in olive oil?
Empty Nest Insider says
As long as Matthew McConaughey isn't doing one of those silly Lincoln commercials, I'm happy to see him. He's made some wonderful movies and he sounds like a perfect fit for Double Negative. Those are some great looking tomatoes! I do believe in second chances, and that no one should ever give up hope.

Elizabeth Seckman says
I love conflicted characters. No real people are just good and bad- we're all a bit of a mix.
I bought Double Negative, but I still need to read it. I buy much faster than I read.
Sara C. Snider says
How exciting that your tomatoes are coming along! Matthew McConaughey sounds like he'd be a great fit for your character. 🙂

Karen Lange says
Love that quote. Can't beat that combo for Italian food. Tomato blossoms – yay! Nice to see their progress. 🙂
Lynda Dietz says
How fun to see your plants progressing! And I think Matthew McConaughey is a great choice for the snippet you featured.
Second chances? I'm all about second chances. I tend to give second, third, and fourth chances, sometimes to my detriment. But I have been the recipient of second chances, so I feel it's only fair to offer them to others.
Nick Wilford says
I do believe in giving second chances… but not an infinite number. I hadn't thought about casting my characters. Definitely a fun idea.
Juneta Key says
I love casting my characters too.
Julie Flanders says
Matthew McConaughey's a great actor. It's fun casting your characters, isn't it? I love it.
Also I definitely believe in giving second chances. I've known people who have done wonders when given a second chance after screwing up. A third chance though, I'd have to think about it. 🙂
Lexa Cain says
Great excerpt, and I think Matthew McConaughey is an excellent actor! Yay for your plants becoming vegetables! I didn't know sour cream was Russian. I'd have guessed French. (I love sour cream! Perhaps Beef Stroganoff should have given me a clue about Russia. lol)
Trin Carl says
If you like McConaughey you should watch Lincoln Lawyer. Great movie.
sage says
I do like that tomato quote and looking forward to my tomatoes to start coming in but hope the main harvest isn't while I'm in Scotland…
Liz A. says
Love the quote. And I definitely "heard" a twang in the excerpt in his voice.
Birgit says
Oh wow…thank you for the shout out! That is so nice. I don't know this show with Matthew. The quote made me smile but I have no clue who this person is
Susan Gourley/Kelley says
I do believe in second chances. I'm not sure if I should plant tomatoes this year since last year my one plant took over the garden. I think if you put all those flavors together, you get American, because we like it all.
Sandra Cox says
Good pick for dad….Though I wish he'd stop doing those car commercials.
Go tomatoes!
Elephant's Child says
Second chances. Most definitely. And sometimes third chances. If at first you don't succeed…
And hooray for tomatoes. And garlic. And rather a lot of other things.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Go Earth Mother! I do need her help this year. And third chances are even better than second ones.
Sheena-kay Graham says
Yay for the tomatoes! That is some good casting Lee. Matt is a wonderful actor. My favorite movie for him is a A Time to Kill. Love both the book and movie adaptation. I believe in second chances but also to watch out for deceivers.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Another movie to add to my Netflix queue. Thanks so much.
Nancy Schoellkopf says
Hi there–I see someone already clued you in that Alice May Brock's restaurant was the inspiration for Arlo Guthrie's song and movie. I had a roommate nearly 40 years ago who owned her cookbook, and all I remembered of it was that delicious quote! Thanks for the Red-Tailed Hawk plug! You have a wonderful blog! Many blessings!
C. Lee McKenzie says
Yes, Shady knows or finds out all. I missed a lot of the 60s here in the states. I saw everything from a very different perspective in SE Asia. Interesting times.
Cathrina Constantine says
Good Father figure for Jimmy.
I do see lots of potential with your tomato plants…
C. Lee McKenzie says
Please keep your fingers crossed for me. I want to see that potential turn into juicy fruit!
Jacqui Murray says
McConaughy is one of those rare actors who rarely does a bad movie. I liked him best in the Lincoln Lawyer.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I haven't seen that one, but I do enjoy watching him, so I'll order it up on Netflix. Thanks, Jacqui.
DEZMOND says
Is McConaughey now in those years when he can start playing fathers?
C. Lee McKenzie says
Looks like it.
Shilpa Garg says
Your characters look cool. Congratulations for your tomato bloom. Hope you get a good volume of fruit. Love that quote in the end and THANKS a TON for sharing about my AtoZ theme. You made my day… no probably a month. Am so glad that you like my attempt at writing stories in 55 words. Thank you so much Lee!
C. Lee McKenzie says
My pleasure. I couldn't do the A to Z this year, but I understand how some support is appreciated. Been there. 🙂
Ruth Schiffmann says
Love how you're casting your characters. And love that excerpt.
I definitely believe in second chances.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I think we all must believe in those. We all need them.
Barbara Fisher says
Oh yes Mathew McConaughey, now you're talking. I am visiting some of the A to Z bloggers and will pop over to the two you mention as soon as I’ve left this comment, thanks for the links. Isn’t Alice May Brock an American artist/author? I honestly don’t know but I just know I’m going to have to go and look her up.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Let me know what you find out about Alice May Brock. Shady has one suggestion. Glad you like Mathew.
Natalie Aguirre says
Yes, totally believe in second choices. Love that quote and your tomatoes. My first lettuce, swiss chard, and kale will hopefully go in this weekend. Just turned the soil.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Yay! Wish were next door. We'd have one heck of a feast between our two gardens.
Pat Hatt says
haha food can sure go every which way, but all the same once in and out.
C. Lee McKenzie says
The cat knows.
H.R. Sinclair, Southpaw says
Pretty flowers, tomato foreshadowing? Brock's quote is spot on!
C. Lee McKenzie says
Yes. Potential is what those buds are all about.
Tyrean Martinson says
I was pleasantly surprised by Hutch's Dad in Double Negative. I'm glad you gave him the depth that he had because it gave Hutch more depth, too.
Great quote!
C. Lee McKenzie says
Thanks, Tyrean. I kind of liked the guy.
Shady Del Knight says
Hi, Cheryl!
Mat M's a good casting choice for Jimmy. Your tomato plant is looking healthy. You must be doing something Write. 🙂
I needed to cheat, but learned that Alice May Brock is the Alice in the famous Arlo Guthrie counterculture anthem of my youth "Alice's Restaurant," the 60s song and album that also inspired a movie. I agree with Alice that garlic is a great and very healthy cooking additive.
Have a great week, dear friend C-Lee!
C. Lee McKenzie says
Thanks for the research! That's never cheating.
Beverly Stowe McClure says
Yes, I believe people should have second chances. No one is perfect. We all make mistakes. And my mouth is watering at the thought of your tomatoes. Good choice for Dad, too. I really want to see this movie.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I'm looking for a producer. 🙂
Christine Rains says
How wonderful your tomatoes are blooming. Our seedlings unfortunately got too much sun and died. So my husband will have to buy some bigger plants. I'm catching up on the blogs this week, and there are some great A to Z themes going on. Enjoy your week! 🙂
C. Lee McKenzie says
Sorry about the scored tomatoes. Glad you're not giving up.
Hilary Melton-Butcher says
Hi Lee – the tomatoes look good – but Mathew MCConachey looks good as a cast member … and that 55 story line – sounds intriguing … while Birgit's films are great fun to read and be reminded about … cheers Hilary

The quote of the week made me hungry…
C. Lee McKenzie says
That's exactly what I intended.
L. Diane Wolfe says
The first blooms appeared on my tomatoes this weekend. So exciting.
Sometimes life is all about second chances.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Indeed it is!
