Is marketing sucking the joy out of your writing life? Then read what
The Insecure Writers’ Support Group Book Club is reading. Our new book selection is based on survey results that showed this area was the biggest challenge for writers.
I’m always reading about other authors’ goals and admiring them for setting down what they plan to accomplish. I’ve been so scattered this year that I’ve started making categories of lists. One will not do. Here’s some of my August GOALS. Take this as the entertainment today.
WRITING:
1. Finish last draft of YA: Not Guilty.
2. Send off last book in Pete Riley trilogy and cross fingers.
3. Write, Edit, Publish Reunions short story.
BUSINESS OF WRITING:
1. Record podcast with Jody Mott re: Alice in Wonderland.
2. Set up Featured Follower for August.
3. Put up new cover for Sliding on the Edge and promote as FREE.
4. Do #IWSG Guest Posts and own posts through Sept.
OTHER LIFE: (What is that?)
1. Set up garden for fall.
2. Pack for France.
3. Buy tickets for Texas.
4. Do all publicity for Library through September.

I want to go to France! I have always wanted to go. I can't wait to hear about your trip when you are back (hopefully you will share pictures too). 🙂
Good luck with all of your goals.
~Jess
C. Lee McKenzie says
Thanks, Jess. Hope your dreams of France happen and when they do, you can tell us about your adventure.
klahanie says
Hey Lee,
Great post! Thanks for sharing!
France will be all the better for having you there. Although, I also note something about tickets for Texas. I could get real confused and think you're going to Paris as in Paris, Texas.
Loads of goals, indeed. I used to score loads of goals back in my days as an ice hockey star, just a star, not a superstar, such as your amazing self.
All the best with reunions.
Yep, your starstruckest fan,
Penny's human dad,
Gary
C. Lee McKenzie says
It might make Sept and Oct easier if the Paris I landed in was the one in Texas, but it really wouldn't be as much fun. Hey! I'm coming to your side of the planet.
Carol Kilgore says
I read Julie Flanders' Reunion story already. It was awesome. Good luck with your busy list 🙂
C. Lee McKenzie says
Julie's story was great. I think this theme is producing some good writing.
Chrys Fey says
You have much to do. I hope you enjoy your downtime in France!
C. Lee McKenzie says
Thanks, Chrys.
Nana Prah says
That was a full post. Sounds like you've been busy. I'm going to have to check out the marketing book because it sounds like it would suit me.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Hanging head in shame. I must get busy and read that book.
Tamara Narayan says
According to that ending quote, I'm having a growth spurt. Sigh. I hope things will be calm once school starts back, but I'm not counting on it. Challenges tend to pop up when you least expect them.
Good luck with your goals. Looks like they will keep you busy.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Sorry if things are challenging you right now, but maybe the quote is right. I hope so.
Yvonne Ventresca says
I like "pack for France." Hope you have a great trip!
C. Lee McKenzie says
Thanks, YV.
Barbara Fisher says
I smiled when I arrived at your blog as my latest post is called reunited with Natty Nora and Tatty Tilly! How’s that for a coincidence?
I’m not sure any of us get much time for that mythical ‘other life’ these days.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I read your post. Now you need to add your name to the linky and claim your spot. Great way to back into a competition, Barbara. 🙂
Misha Gericke says
You and me both. ^_^
Enjoy France and Texas.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Hi Misha! Thanks.
sage says
I like the WEP theme but since I am away doing planning, writing and reading for work until the 18, with limited internet access, I am not sure I can make this month's theme. But October's sounds great.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Wonderful. Look forward to your October contribution.
D Biswas says
So tempted to join the linky, but need to sink my teeth into the next WIP, wish you and all the other participants lots of luck!
C. Lee McKenzie says
I know what you mean. Love the challenge. Short on time.
Denise Covey - Author says
Hi Lee. Thanks for the WEP shout out. And thanks for the info re marketing and writing. Awesome.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Loved your theme this month.
Liz A. says
So many write down their goals for the month. You'll have to let us know if this helps you achieve them.
C. Lee McKenzie says
At least I'll see what I haven't done!
Sandra Cox says
What stands out here for me is pack for France!
How exciting.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Right. Me, too. I'm not a fashion kind of gal, so that has me spinning a bit. I know my jeans and tennis shoes aren't the best choices.
Kelly Steel says
All the best with your goals!
I've just been to Paris and some other cities. Its so lovely!
C. Lee McKenzie says
I hope to see a lot of the south of France this trip. Fingers crossed, I'll get some good pictures and some good stories.
The Cynical Sailor says
Wow those are some impressive goals you're tackling. A trip to France sounds fun. The French sure know how to do things right when it comes to cooking. Now I'm dreaming of pain au chocolat and cafe au lait for some reason. 🙂
C. Lee McKenzie says
Oh yes. I plan on taking another size jean just in case the pastries expand my you-know-what!
Jacqui Murray says
I like the 'other life'. It's there isn't it, outside of writing. I love the image.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I often think there is no other life, and then my family demands food and clean clothes. Don't they understand?
Elephant's Child says
I have already read and marvelled at some amazing contributions to WEP.
And am looking forward (a lot) to yours. Which is greedy. With all you have on your agenda I would be velcroed to the carpet under the bed refusing to come out.
Good luck.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I hadn't thought about velcro. Thank you so much for that idea!
DEZMOND says
Pack for France? We're going to France? OMG!
Speaking of YA, I cannot seem to escape it, my new publishers, I've started working for this summer, also covers mostly YA like my previous ones.
C. Lee McKenzie says
You're going to France? Let's have a coffee and croissant. Now that would be something, wouldn't it? I like some YA, not all, so I hear what you're saying. What publisher? Just curious.
Shady Del Knight says
Hi, Cheryl-Lee!
I am encouraged by what I learned about you in this post because, along the way, I learned that successful people make lists, lots of lists. Getting your ideas written down in front of you is important. If you feel overwhelmed looking at your list or, in your case, your various categories of lists, it is a good thing. It keeps the juices flowing, forces you to stay in an "up time" state and practice organization and time utilization skills. As the quote reminds us, we grow when we face challenges. Tackling a long list of projects is a challenge, but there's nothing like the satisfaction you experience as you cross completed items off your list one by one. The key is to never allow yourself to get to the end of your list. Keep adding items onto the list and you will remain driven, sharp, at the top of your game.
Have a super week, dear friend C-Lee!
C. Lee McKenzie says
You've said it so well, Shady! Keep that list going and grow with the challenges.
Carrie-Anne says
Good luck with your August goals! Given my current circumstances, my only goal is to keep getting words written, even if it's not anywhere close to my normal monthly average.
C. Lee McKenzie says
At least you have a goal. This summer swept past with nothing firm in my goal department until this post. Blogging did help me get organized.
Pat Hatt says
You sure have a lot on the go there at your show. Already go tour WEP done, times two with this month's run.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I'll have to make the WEP rounds today. It seems several peeps have already posted theirs!
Beverly Stowe McClure says
Very ambitious goals that I know you will accomplish. Great to hear you have some new books in the works.
Have a super week.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Thanks, Beverly. I appreciate the confidence since I'm coming up short in it this month.
Nick Wilford says
You'll do all of these goals. Maybe pick a bit from each category each day. I think I could use that book.
C. Lee McKenzie says
And I haven't even started reading that book yet! Egads.
Hilary Melton-Butcher says
Hi Lee – goals, goals, goals … well I'd better get to it. Luckily there are many bloggers who are reliable who can help with things, and send us off to reputable information sources …
We definitely don't grow when we're not challenged … my WEP went up early … cheers Hilary
C. Lee McKenzie says
I don't remember how research used to be prior to the internet and its immense data base. I'll come by and see your WEP!
L. Diane Wolfe says
Other life – what is that? Although anymore I wonder what writing is since I'm focused on everyone else's work.
Go after those goals.
C. Lee McKenzie says
I understand. I thought I was busy before I started this business. I had no idea what I was getting into.
Jemi Fraser says
Wow! That's a lot!!!! I bet you'll make it all no sweat 🙂
I have to make decisions about next steps for my dementia project. Not sure which direction (if any) to take with it
C. Lee McKenzie says
I wish you luck in finding your direction. Dementia is a terrible thing. It affects everyone, not only the person with the decline in memory. Let us know what you do.
