O is for Occult |
“oc·cult [əˈkəlt] n. Occult practices or techniques: a student of the occult. v. To conceal or cause to disappear from view. adj. Of, relating to, or dealing with supernatural influences, agencies, or phenomena.
Synonyms: n: supernatural, v: eclipse, adj: mystic, orphic, mysterious, mystical, secret
Etymology: adj: 1530s, “secret, not divulged,” from Middle French occulte and directly from Latin occultus “hidden, concealed, secret,” past participle of occulere “cover over, conceal,” from ob “over” (see ob-) + a verb related to celare “to hide,” from PIE root *kel- “to hide” (see cell). Meaning “not apprehended by the mind, beyond the range of understanding” is from 1540s. The association with the supernatural sciences (magic, alchemy, astrology, etc.) dates from 1630s.
Isn’t that one interesting? To be perfectly honest, I had no idea it could also be a verb.”
Me either! So I learned something from this post.

Hi Lee – oh dear I was relying on everyone else .. no such luck then – I'ma movin' on … to see who the clever blogger is to blog us all down a year later .. you deserve a Cadbury's Chocolate Medal for this one – Happy Easter .. Hilary

I'm going to occult my laundry,
Medeia Sharif says
I don't know, but the occult is fascinating.
Sher A. Hart says
It would be cheating if I claimed to know the answer before I saw two others agree. Now I don't need a crystal ball although I haven't been a good blog reader due to moving, my cat going missing for 5 weeks in freezing weather, nursing him back to health, me learning how to care for chickens (and having 2 stolen by a fox or some occult occurrence) and etc… You probably don't want to know what occult means to me, but I'm a reformed Clincal Lab Scientist who used to have to check for occult blood in . . .yuck. You shouldn't need a crystal ball to know I'm so much happier as a writer and editor.

Matthew MacNish! I read this last year… on "The Quintessentially Questionable Query Experiment"!! 🙂

I can't even make a guess. Looks like you've stumped us on this one.
C. Lee McKenzie says
And I thought this one would be easy. So hard to tell.
Lexa Cain says
I know this! I know this! It's my old friend and faithful companion Dictionary.Com! We've spent many a long evening together. (Whew. Thank goodness I finally got one. With everyone else doing so well every day, I was starting to feel occulted.)
C. Lee McKenzie says
You're using new knowledge. I'm so impressed. I'll bet your teachers adored you, Lexa! I see The Cat tallying points right now.
Marcia says
I guess occult as a verb is a synonym of eclipse, in the astronomical sense? Certainly not used often!
C. Lee McKenzie says
Never have seen it used as a verb, so this was news to me.
Arlee Bird says
What a cool thing you're doing. Not that I'd be any good at it. If you gave me hints about what I did last year I probably wouldn't even recognize it. My poor old memory.

Southpaw says
I think this blogger has occulted himself. (heehee)
C. Lee McKenzie says
Laughing, Southpaw. Thanks for the chuckle.
Bish Denham says
I haven't a clue, but it looks like I'm not the only one! You are being entirely too occultic (?) with this one. That's my witticism and I'm sticking to it.
C. Lee McKenzie says
Best that you do. I love it. The Cat is giving one paw up!
S.K. Anthony says
I didn't know it could be a verb either! How cool 😀
debi o'neille says
No idea. Never thought of this word as a verb. Now I'll have to create a reason to use it. 🙂

Got me on this one, Lee…
Occult is such a fascinating subject… I'd love to write a novel with some sort of occult running through it!

Do it, Michael. It would be great.

C. Lee McKenzie says
As the teens would say, LOL!
Nick Wilford says
Oops, got nothing either. But now I want to use occult as a verb!
C. Lee McKenzie says
Hi Nick! Thanks for stopping in. No guess, heh? Well, it has been a year.
Angela Brown says
That is an interesting thing to learn, yet I must say that I do not know who this blogger is *holds head low in shame*
C. Lee McKenzie says
No shame, Angela. I think this one is a toughy.
Alex J. Cavanaugh says
You got me on that one – bummer!
Oh, and sorry Gary.
C. Lee McKenzie says
How did this happen? We had a plot, er, plan all set and everything. Still, here you are first! Where are you Gary?
klahanie says
"O" is for "Oops!" Due to circumstances beyond my control, the devious conspiracy plot, um, the getting here first, got screwed up because I cannot lie, I dozed off.
